We're pleased to announce a significant improvement to disk serial number detection in FreePCAudit .
The Problem:
Windows WMI has long returned incorrect serial numbers for NVMe SSDs. Instead of the actual manufacturer serial number, WMI reports EUI-64 or NGUID identifiers – cryptic strings like 0000_0000_0000_0000_8CE3_8E10_010D_50FE that don't match the serial on the drive label or manufacturer warranty records.
The Solution:
Our latest updates now query the NVMe controller directly using the NVMe Identify Controller command, bypassing the Windows storage stack limitation. This returns the true manufacturer serial number – the same one you'd find on the drive label, in the manufacturer's warranty records or with the drive manufacturer's utility.
What's Fixed:
Ready to upgrade? Download the latest version of FreePCAudit to get accurate NVMe serial numbers in your inventory.
