Network Asset Tracker Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why I can't view information about users' PCs?
A: You must have domain administrator rights to view the information on remote PCs. Or you can try to use Custom Logon. From the "File" menu, choose "Options", then "Custom Logon".

Q: Why I can't view information from a user's PC with Windows XP SP2?
A: Use the following steps in the Group Policy editor (Gpedit.msc) to enable "Allow Remote Administration" on remote PC with XP SP2.
1. Under the Local Computer Policy heading, open the Computer Configuration folder.
2. Open the Administrative Templates folder.
3. Open the Network folder.
4. Open the Network Connections folder.
5. Open the Windows Firewall folder.
6.If the computer is in the domain, then open the Domain Profile folder; otherwise, open the Standard Profile folder.
7.Click Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception.
8.On the Action menu, select Properties.
9.Click Enable, and then click OK.

Q: Why I can't view information from a PC with Windows 2003?
A: In Windows XP and earlier, the WMI Windows Installer Provider is installed by default. In Windows 2003 the WMI Windows Installer Provider is an optional component. To install this provider, open the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet and click Add/Remove Windows Components. Select the Management and Monitoring Tools check box, then click Details. Select the WMI Windows Installer Provider check box, and click OK.

Q: Why I can't view information from a user PC with Windows 95/98?
A: You must install the WMI core. You can download it from microsoft.com

Q: I have installed WMI core on PCs with Windows 95/98, but can't view information from them.
A: The Windows Management service starts automatically on computers running Microsoft Windows NT/Microsoft Windows 2000, but not on computers running Windows 95/98. To set up the Windows Management service to start automatically on a Windows 95/98 system, you must make the following changes to the operating system registry.

To set up the Windows Management service to run automatically on a computer running Windows 95/98
  1. In the registry, navigate to the value named EnableRemoteConnect.
  2. Under the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OLE, set EnableDCOM to "Y" if it is not set to "Y" already. "Y" is the default setting.
  3. In the registry under the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OLE, set EnableRemoteConnect to "Y". The default setting for the EnableRemoteConnect value is "N" for Windows 95/98 systems.
  4. Place the following entry in the registry to enable the WMI automatic start feature:
    \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\wbem\cimom - AutostartWin9X
  5. Set the AutostartWin9X value to either "1" or "2". The following table lists possible values for AutostartWin9X and their meanings.

  6. Value Meaning
    "0" Manual
Use this setting when you do not need the service running continuously. When a local request comes in, WMI starts to service the request. If you later restart the computer, the computer will start in manual mode (WMI will not start automatically).

Note that remote startup requests are only supported on Windows NT/Windows 2000. Remote startup requests are not supported by COM on Windows 95/98.
"1" Automatic if the computer system needs to reload
Use this setting if you would normally have active event consumers. If WMI has active event consumers and the system (any system that supports WMI) needs to be restarted, WMI starts automatically after the system starts.
    "2" Automatic
Windows Management service always starts automatically.

  7. Add the file Winmgmt.exe to the computer's Startup directory. You can find this file in the \Windows\WBEM directory.
  8. Under the key \HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\wbem\cimom set EnableAnonConnections to "1".

Q: I tryed all above, but still can't view information from remote computers.
A: Increase option "Response time". To do this, choose the menu "File" -> "Options", choose "General".

Q: What do I get after registration of the program?
A: You get a fully functional version of program, free technical support and free updates to the program with the identical major-number.

Q: Is Network Asset Tracker spyware?
A: Network Asset Tracker is shareware, not adware or spyware! Network Asset Tracker will never send any data to us!
